Things move. Things shift and squirm, and tumble and fall.
They don’t work out, they can’t find their feet; the things we hope for might not happen at all;
“Sorry love, I just can’t make it tonight
I wish I could…” or maybe, this just doesn’t feel right.
Maybe I’m saying: “you’re just not good enough”
but all you’re looking for is someone to tell you that You. Are. Enough.
You are worth something. You are beautiful.
So you put in a face, day in, day out:
a face that says “I can do anything”.
A face that is strong, independent; or maybe just a loud mouth.
Nobody can see you, because you don’t let them;
no, what they see is just a perception.
They fill in the gaps, make their own person,
leaving who you are up to interpretation.
But there is one who sees through –
who sees through to the you that you are supposed to be.
He’s the one that wanted you so much that He made you;
moulded out of skin and bones,
hopes and dreams,
and so beautiful.
He gave you your laugh, your smile –
and maybe he hasn’t seen it in a while, but His heart breaks with yours.
He cries when you cry,
laughs with your joy;
sees the heartbreak that you felt over some boy
who couldn’t see you the way that you does.
But I pray that the joy of the Lord will be your strength.
That doesn’t mean fake a smile – be OK for a while –
It means that delight in God is your refuge;
it’s your hiding place,
It’s where you go instead of putting on a face,
some make-up; just stop,
and take a moment to look up.
Look up at the Father, your saviour, your friend –
because of Him, this isn’t the end.
This doesn’t end with us feeling not enough;
instead, it’s Him feeling chuffed: so proud at all that He has done
that He looks down and says “I want that girl”.
And He doesn’t move, He doesn’t change –
no, this God is the beginning and the end.
The things we hope for, they’re coming, while we’re constantly transforming into the person that we are designed to be.
Look up – and see the one smiling down on you.
delight in Him;
because He delights in you, too.
